rossdunning5

On the 7th of September 2022 the second amendment for the 18th Edition comes into the industry.

For the first time in its history the IET have added a section at the front of the publication there is a clear explanation of the language used within BS7671, hopefully to iron out the ambiguity on the understanding, so now there is clear guidance, between recommendation and requirement. Eg Shall (requirement) would/might(recommendation)

There are changes to 411.3.3 with regards to the risk assessment , which is tied into appendix 5 and highlights where they can be omitted

There is changes to 421.17 which details what type of properties require AFFD protection

High Risk residential buildings (HRRB) over 18 meters or 6 stories

Houses of multiple occupation

Purpose build student accommodation

Care Homes

For other properties it is recommended

Reg 443.5 previously we had the calculation to confirm Surge protection requirements, that has been removed, replaced by a simpler arrangement

There has been some changes to cable colour coding with the introduction of solid green is back but for control and ELV

There is changes to the new install test cert where they have removed the inspection document pages and reduced to a small box, please note these inspection are still required and by ticking thew one box you are signing that they have been undertaken, on this I would still like to see the inspection pages filled out as part of our initial verification process #

They have given detail on insulation resistance testing 643.3, and this something that should be undertaken already but they have put into writing, where cables are pulled in at first fix stage : EG lighting circuit: the conductors must be tested prior to equipment being connected at 500VDC and then again once the kit is connected at 250 VDC

643.7.1 There is changes to RCD testing and we now need to record the type of RCD we are testing, see 3 A Appendix 3. They the requirement is to prove the devise can work, rather than proving disconnections times, this is because when tested the amount of current used to undertake the test is very small then that the possible fault current that would see in anger. 643.7.1 details a clear note of how RCD should be tested

Note : Regardless of RCD type , effectiveness is deemed to have been verified where an RCD disconnects within the time stated below with an alternating current test rated residual operating current I Delta N.

For general non delayed type 300ms max

For delay S type RCD between 130ms min and max 500ms

Previously there was a note in 415.1.1 where we proved disconnection within 40ms at 5x it’s rated residual current. This is now gone and replaced with Regardless of type, effectiveness is deemed to have been verified where an RCD disconnects within the time stated below with an alternating current test at rating residual operating current IDeltaN

For general no delay type 300ms max

701.512 They have reduced the distance a socket outlet from bath from 3 meters to 2.5 meter

Labelling has been reduced on domestic installations where next inspection , RCD, wiring of 2 versions of BS7671 are no longer required

The label for 2 versions of BS7671 has also been removed from the new addition
